The slot terms you keep running into, explained briefly

From RTP to break-even: the terms you meet on our slot pages and in our tools, kept short and readable without prior knowledge.

RTP (Return to Player)
The share of all stakes a slot pays back over the long run, given as a percentage. An RTP of 96% does not mean you get 96% of your stake back: the figure holds over millions of spins, not over one session. The gap to 100% is the house edge.

Volatility
Describes how a slot's wins are distributed. Low volatility pays often and small, high volatility rarely and large. Two slots with the same RTP can therefore feel completely different.

Max win
The ceiling a slot can pay out, given as a multiple of the stake. At 5,000x that is 5,000 euros on a one euro stake. It is a cap, not a promise: the vast majority of rounds end far below it.
Bonus buy
The option to buy the bonus round outright instead of waiting for scatters. The price is given as a multiple of the stake. The RTP when buying often differs from the regular one, sometimes higher, sometimes lower.
Paylines
The fixed patterns on which symbols combine into a win. Classic slots have a few, modern ones often hundreds. Slots without paylines pay by clusters or by all ways from left to right instead.
Reels
The vertical columns in which the symbols appear. Five reels are the standard today. Some slots change their number during play, for example in the bonus round.
Rows
The horizontal lines of the grid. Together with the reels they form the layout: five reels and three rows make fifteen positions. More rows mean more possible combinations.
Megaways
A licensed mechanic in which each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin. The number of ways to win therefore changes from round to round, often beyond 100,000. Megaways slots tend to be highly volatile.

How slots work

What happens on the reels and how wins come about

Multiplier
A factor that multiplies a win. A 3x multiplier turns ten euros into thirty. In bonus rounds they often climb from spin to spin.
Free spins
Rounds that cost no stake but pay out normally. Usually triggered by scatters and almost always carrying an extra rule, such as sticky wilds or rising multipliers.
Scatter
A symbol that counts regardless of paylines: it only has to be somewhere on the grid, not on a particular line. Three of them usually trigger the bonus round.
Wild
A symbol that substitutes for others and completes combinations. Variants stay in place for several spins, expand across a whole reel, or carry a multiplier of their own.
Bonus round
The part of the game most slots are built around. It is triggered by scatters or bought outright, follows its own rules and accounts for most of the payout.
Cascading
Winning symbols disappear, the rest drop down and new ones fall in from above. This repeats as long as new wins keep forming. Tumble, Avalanche and Rolling Reels are provider names for the same mechanic. How multipliers attach differs from game to game: sometimes the multiplier rises with every cascade, sometimes the wins of a chain accumulate and a late multiplier applies to the whole amount.
Cluster pays
Instead of paylines, groups of identical symbols touching horizontally or vertically pay. Usually from five symbols upwards and mostly on larger grids such as six by six or seven by seven.
Sticky
A symbol that stays put while the rest keeps spinning. Common for wilds in the bonus, where a fixed pattern builds up over several rounds.
Respin
An extra spin of individual reels while the others stand still. Often offered after a near miss or triggered automatically by a symbol.
Expanding
A symbol that expands across the entire reel and occupies every position on it. Typical for wilds during free spins.
Gamble
The option to double a win after the round or lose it entirely, usually by picking a colour or a card. It does not change the expected value, only the swing.
Jackpot
A fixed amount or a growing pot paid out on top of the regular win. Progressive jackpots are fed by a share of all stakes and are often already included in the stated RTP.
Hold and Win
A bonus in which collected symbols stay in place and every new landing resets the counter. It ends after three rounds without a hit or when the grid is full.
Mystery symbol
A face-down symbol that only turns into a regular one after the reels stop, with all of them becoming the same symbol at once. That is how rounds happen that fill the whole grid in one go.
Nudge
A reel shifts by one position so that a symbol sitting just off the mark still lands in place. Classic for scatters that are only half visible.

Community data and tools

Terms from the Bet Analyzer, the Bonus Hunt tracker and the Slot Grind tracker

Community RTP
The RTP our users actually measured, not the one the provider states. It comes from the betting archives uploaded to the Bet Analyzer. With enough rounds it converges on the official figure; a lasting gap is worth a second look.

See also:Bet Analyzer

Reliability threshold
The condition under which we show a community RTP at all. It has two parts: enough contributed rounds, and a 95% confidence band that is narrow enough. Rounds alone are not enough: a wide band means the figure can still jump by double-digit percentage points. The Bet Analyzer shows the current values.

Hit frequency
How often a spin pays anything at all, regardless of size. A rate of 25% means every fourth spin wins, often less than the stake. It says nothing about the RTP.

Variance and volatility
Both describe how much results fluctuate and are mostly used interchangeably. Providers state volatility as a level, from low to very high; variance is the mathematical term behind it. In practice you can treat them as the same.

Bonus Hunt
A session in which you play on a fixed start balance until a planned number of bonus rounds is collected. Only then are the bonuses opened one after another. Our tracker works out what you need to break even along the way.

See also:Bonus Hunt Tracker

Start balance
The amount a Bonus Hunt or Slot Grind starts with. Every figure of the session refers to it: profit, loss and the break-even point. If you top up along the way, record it as an adjustment so the maths stays right.

Break-even
The average multiplier the collected bonuses have to reach for the session to end level. It follows from the start balance, the number of bonuses and the average bet. The more expensive the hunt, the higher it sits.

See also:Bonus Hunt Tracker

Average bet
The mean of the stakes the bonuses of a session were collected at. It is the reference for the break-even: the same win counts for less as a multiplier when the stake was high.

X-win
A win expressed as a multiple of the stake instead of in currency. 250 euros on a one euro stake is 250x. That makes wins comparable across stake sizes and currencies.

Slot Grind
Playing one single slot deliberately to chase its max win. Unlike a Bonus Hunt, every bonus is played straight away. Our tracker records each round and shows how far off the maximum you are.

See also:Slot Grind

Ante bet
A raised stake, usually 1.25 times the normal one, that improves the chance of triggering the bonus. The RTP shifts slightly with it. Not every slot offers it, and it is not permitted everywhere.
Feature spin
A single purchased spin with a raised chance of a feature, cheaper than a full bonus buy. What exactly it triggers differs from slot to slot.

Maths and fairness

The quantities behind the randomness and how it becomes verifiable

House edge
The share of stakes that stays with the operator over the long run: the gap between 100% and the RTP. At 96% RTP that is 4%. It works over time, not within a single round.

See also:RTP Calculator

Expected value (EV)
The average outcome of a bet, projected over any number of repetitions. On slots it is negative, otherwise the game would not exist. A decision with positive EV yields more in the long run than one with negative EV.

See also:RTP Calculator

RNG (random number generator)
The algorithm that decides every outcome. It works independently of previous rounds: a slot does not run hot or cold, and a long dry spell does not make the next hit any more likely.
Provably fair
A method that lets anyone verify a result afterwards. A value is committed to and published before the draw, and afterwards anyone can check that it was not altered. Our giveaways work this way.

Seed and nonce
The two building blocks of a provably fair outcome. The seed is the secret starting value, the nonce counts the rounds up. Together they produce a result that can be recomputed afterwards without being predictable beforehand.
